Pulse was the live, double CD document of The Division Bell tour of 1994. The players were mostly the same group Pink Floyd had assembled for the Delicate Sound of Thunder tour in the late-80s: Guy Pratt on bass, Jon Carin on keyboards, Tim Renwick on guitar, and percussionist Gary Wallis, in addition to Rick Wright and Nick Mason.
For this tour the group decided to perform Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety. Disc two of Pulse, therefore, is a live recording of that 1973 classic Rock standard, followed by an encore of 'Wish You Were Here','Comfortably Numb', and 'Run Like Hell'.
As noteworthy as the recording was the album’s packaging. The discs and booklets were housed in a cardboard box, complete with a red light in the spine, blinking out a perpetual heartbeat rhythm.
Below New York's Empire State Building, 'Pulse' posters and billboards lined the streets, and above citizens heads, the top of the building was turned into a monster light show that celebrated the release of 'Pulse'.
6 different 'Pulse' albums were released...2 of each of CD, Tape and Vinyl.
Between Oct 12 and 29, 1994, Pink Floyd performed the end of The Division Bell tour at Earls Court, in the U.K.
The proceeds from all 14 of the shows performed (one was cancelled due to seating collapse) were donated to benefit Greenpeace, Amnesty International and other groups.
Oct. 20 was the date of the pay-per-view satellite broadcast of 'Pulse'. This was just one of the performance dates used in creating the 'Pulse' video that was released the following year.
At some point during one of the Earl's Court shows, Roger Waters was in attendance with a group of friends. David invited Roger to come on stage and perform during DSoTM, Roger refused.
At the first Earl's Court show, Oct. 12, during the intro, a section of seating collapsed, injuring some fans, but fortunately none were hurt seriously, the show was cancelled for that night.
More lighting effects and lasers were added for the taping of the 'Pulse' video. For the 1st time the mirror ball was lowered from a hidden area in the ceiling instead of rising from the back of the mixer, and truly surprised the fans.
Quotes "The reason for Pulse is Dark Side Of The Moon, obviously. We weren't going to do a live album for this tour; it seemed a bit superfluous having just done one a few years ago. But, as we started out on the tour, we were looking for ways to change the show around and make ourselves a little more flexible and have a little fun, and Dark Side Of The Moon was one of the ideas that came across." - Dave
"So we did it on the end of our American tour, and then when we carried it over to Europe, we started thinking,'Well, it would be nice for us...and for posterity...to have a live version of Dark Side Of The Moon,' which I always particularly wanted." - Dave
"I'm not big on playing small places with Pink Floyd. I mean, when we'd been doing this tour for six months and finally got back to London, we played Earl's Court, which holds about 18,000 people. That was a nice small club, like being in Madison Square Garden." (laughs)- Dave
"We've had a lot of people doing guitar parts for us. Tim Renwick played a bit on Pulse. I've known him since he was a kid, since he was 13. He was from Cambridge, where I'm from, and he's always been a damn good guitar player." - Dave
"I don't think I had any inkling of what I'd be doing at 49 when I was 21. I didn't give it a thought. I didn't think anyone ever got to this stage. But there are a lot of black blues players in their eighties and nineties who are still going strong, and, well, luckily there's no rules, and no one to tell us what we can and cannot do...except the public, who support us and buy our records." - Dave
"The 'Pulse' iris is more like the eye of the Pink Floyd punter (you and me) rather than the actual eye of Pink Floyd. It is the reflection of what we see and represent of the Floyd work. The doll image seen, is actually incomplete, it was the closest thing that I could find to a puppet at the time. As The Wall images are animated we couldn't include them as photographs, so I had to use a puppet instead." - Storm Thorgerson (Pulse cover)
